Alumni Weekend 2013 (50th Anniversary)

It was a great weekend for the 80+ Alumni who enjoyed the College of Charleston Sailing 50th Anniversary festivities. Past C of C sailors made the trek to Charleston from as far away as Southern California- and former sailors joined us from Detroit, Milwaukee, New York, Boston, Norfolk and of course Charleston! It was super to have such a turnout to celebrate the team’s 50 years of successful sailing!

The Friday evening kickoff party at the Bay Street Biergarten turned into a great chance to reacquaint and catchup with everyone; and a wonderful time was had by all. On Saturday, the racing started at noon. Though the breeze was pretty light, 6 races were

sailed before the breeze totally shut off. 16 FJ’s and 5 of our brand new J/22’s (that were just launched the week before) were used for the racing. The racing started out fairly competitive in the beginning but by the end of the afternoon, the group had completely relaxed and everyone was enjoying the atmosphere out on the water. Although the scoring wasn’t totally ‘official,’ the race committee determined (a bit subjectively) that Sammy Stokes ’12 and crew Johnny Norfleet took the FJ honors, while Cole Allsopp ’11 and his team won the J/22’s…. At any given time his team was comprised of as many as 8 crew- so we won’t list them all here!

Later that evening, everyone met up back on campus in the hospitality suite above the new TD arena. Pictures from past C of C teams rotated through on the huge screen as everyone reminisced about the good old times. Robert Ball of the original College of Charleston Sailing team from 50 years ago gave a nice talk about sailing for C of C back in the day with his team mate John Siegling. He then described what it was like sailing the J22 Saturday with present day recent alum …and the new sailing lingo he learned.

Zeke, Alumni of the Year

Zeke Horowitz ’12 receiving the Alumni of the Year award!

Appreciation awards were presented to those who had worked hard for C of C sailing over the years. Kurt Oberle was the first recipient for all his efforts in helping launch the new fleet of J/22’s. Ryan Hamm, Jeff Aschieris, Laura Doupnik, Brooks Clark, Mac Mace, Ben Spector, Cory Decollibus, Sam Stokes and Cole Allsopp were also all recognized for their contributions to C of C sailing. It was Zeke Horowitz who was  presented “the Alumni of the Year” award by last year’s winner, David Dabney,  for  his efforts to help coach the team this past season and umpire our major team race events.  Zeke ‘12 was joined by Jeff Aschieris ‘13, now working with C of C athletics for the “Cougar Club” in fund raising, in describing  new plans for a “C of C Yacht Club” primarily created for alumni in providing even more opportunity to sail under the C of C burgee. Watch for future emails and the opportunity to join as a charter member. A new plan for an Alumni Advisory Board to the C of C Sailing program and many enthusiastic alum offered to join up- thanks!

Finally Jeff emphasized the value of alumni support, and that more than half of the sailing program’s funding comes from donor contributions. He urged everyone to join him in supporting the team right then and there- thanks Jeff! By 8:30pm the official Saturday evening events concluded, and the gang ventured off on their own to enjoy all that downtown Charleston has to offer.

Sunday morning, maybe early (but not so bright), most of the Alumno met out at the sailing center for one last sail- a team race day challenging the College of Charleston 2012 National Championship Team. Unfortunately, a cold front blew through earlier that morning and the rain and chillier temps failed to stir the enthusiasm for the gang to head on out. After 3 or 4 cups of coffee and some final socializing and good byes, the 2013 Alumni weekend closed at 11:30.

For those of you who joined us, we appreciate your coming and we’d love to hear any feedback you have on how we can make this weekend even better next year. For those who couldn’t make it, stay tuned as the dates for the 2014 Alumni weekend will be announced soon! We sure hope (and plan) to make it even bigger and better!

Have a great, sailing filled, safe 2014!
