Summer 2014, Advanced
The College of Charleston and historic Patriots Point Maritime Museum, home of the USS Yorktown, have teamed up to create a “truly historic” Advanced Youth Racing Clinic unlike any other in the US! Named “the best all-around” college sailing team in the country in 2012, and Gill Coed National Champions in 2013, the College of Charleston Varsity Sailing Team defines excellence in competitive sailing!
This three day clinic, primarily focused on the fundamentals of short course collegiate style racing necessary to compete at the elite level in high school and college racing, will be conducted by College of Charleston Sailing Head Coach Ward Cromwell, Assistant Coach Mitch Hall, and Director of Sailing Greg Fisher. While sailing in the Charleston Harbor with its warm temperatures and consistent sea breezes, students will learn and practice the same drills utilized in coaching the C of C Varsity Sailing Team in the school’s 18 420 and 18 FJ fleets.
The clinic will open registration at 8:45am on Tuesday and end at 3:30pm on Thursday. The clinic instruction will start at 9am all 3 days. There will be discussion time in the classroom as well as a great deal of time on the water training and racing.
Additionally, all clinic participants and their chaperones will enjoy the opportunity to stay aboard the legendary WWII aircraft carrier, USS Yorktown at Patriots Point in Mt. Pleasant, SC. Just across the Charleston Harbor from beautiful downtown Charleston. The USS Yorktown, just steps away from the C of C Sailing facility, has fully equipped berthing quarters for female and male campers. Breakfast and dinner will be served in the mess hall aboard the ship, and lunch will be provided at the C of C Sailing Center.
Chaperones are encouraged to stay aboard the Yorktown with their sailors, but it is not necessary. We certainly can still have your children join the clinic even if you are unable to come, though we’d love to have you. However, parents in the past have raved about how much they enjoyed staying on the ship with their kids. The fees listed for Chaperones/Parents are all inclusive of meals, sleeping quarters and even a T-shirt!
The ship is air-conditioned and quite comfortable but does not provide bedding/pillows. If this is a problem please let us know and we’ll work to help accommodate your needs.
Participants will stay on the Yorktown Tuesday and Wednesday evenings. If housing is needed for Monday and/or Thursday nights please refer to our welcome information sheet that lists many of the local hotels near to Patriots Point. Most will, if asked, provide a discount when mentioning your involvement with C of C Sailing at registration. Obviously the most ideal, but unfortunately one of the more expensive, is the Charleston Harbor Resort that is a mere 100 yds. from our facility.
Summertime is a beautiful time to sail in Charleston. With temperatures often approaching 90 (but not much over!) the sea breeze of 10-15mph usually appears around noon. With water temperatures close to 78 degrees, the sailing here is nothing less than spectacular!
In the evenings, clinic attendees will participate in a variety of activities, including a symposium with special guest speakers, past national champions / C of C Alumni, discussions with our physical trainer, and even a Skype chat with past Olympians! Time will be available to relax and partake in activities aboard the historic Yorktown as well.
Here are some suggested items to bring:
-Close toed shoes (no flops in the boats please)
-Water bottle (we will have iced water from a filtered faucet available. We are trying to avoid using plastic water bottles to remain green)
-Comfortable sailing attire
-Spare changes of clothes
-A notebook and pen to take copious notes!
Two College of Charleston Sailing Advanced Racing Youth Clinics will be held:
-Tuesday, June 24th through Thursday, June 26th.
-Tuesday, July 22nd through Thursday, July 24th.
The cost is $675.00 per camper, $230 for non-sailing adult chaperones and this price is all inclusive. T-shirts will be provided. Special pricing is available for local sailors who don’t plan to reside on the Yorktown.
