Sailing venue and the J. Stewart Walker Complex
The College of Charleston sails in the Cooper River in the northwest corner of the Charleston Harbor, adjacent to the historic aircraft carrier, the Yorktown. We have 3 different sailing areas to choose from, depending on breeze and current. There is significant current in Charleston to say the least. In the picture above we may sail in the far upper right corner almost under the bridge, in “the marsh”. In ideal conditions we will sail in center picture directly to the left of the Yorktown, in “The River”. Finally in lighter winds and especially heavy current, we’ll sail around the corner of the marina to the south (lower right in the picture) to “Crab Bank”. Rarely do we find less than acceptable sailing!
Our sailing center has a classroom, work room, ample dockage, an 18 boat fleet of 420’s, an 18 boat fleet of FJ’s, 8 Lasers, 10 J/22’s and 5 power boats. We offer plenty of potable cold water but we unfortunately do Not have a restroom on site. So if you’re in need, please stop at the Marina office center at the far left/south end of the marina or at the gas dock at the end of the first finger pier once you turn right towards the J. Stewart Sailing Center.
Normally the temperature ranges from the upper 40’s/low 50’s in the dead of winter (December/January) to the mid 90’s in mid-summer. In the hottest summer months, usually a southerly 10-15 knot southerly sea breeze will cool things down by 1-2pm. In the spring (April/May), some of the very best sailing takes place in Charleston normally with southerly breeze of 8-12 and temps in the upper 70’s. Fall can be a little lighter but it is rare that it’s too light to sail. Of course here is the disclaimer: – once a predicted “normal” weather pattern is put to print it will never materialize!
